Spring Points Race, $200 in prizes

We’re going to be running a points race at Cal Billiards, starting April 16th, running through June 11th. Come and play every week for a chance to win!

Overall Winner: $100 cash

Top Player: Expert: $50 cash

Top Player: Rookie: $50 in free tournament entries

So, how do you win? Show up and play! The better you do the more points you get. Everyone who attends gets one attendance point. Bonus points depend on which events we play.

Monster DYP with Doubles Playoffs:

1st place team: 4 points each

2nd place team: 3 points each

3rd place team: 2 points each

4th place team: 1 points each

Open Singles/Handicap Singles/Monster DYP with Singles Playoffs:

1st place: 4 points

2nd place: 3 points

3rd place: 2 points

4th place: 1 point

Monster DYP with No Playoffs:

1st place: 4 points

2nd place: 3.5 points

3rd place: 3 points

4th place: 2.5 points

5th place: 2 points

6th place: 1.5 points

7th place: 1 point

Players can win at most one prize. If somebody wins multiple categories, that’s amazing, we’ll give them the higher value prize and an extra pat on the back. 2nd place in the category will take the lower value prize.

In case of a tie, the following tie-break rules will apply:

  1. Number of finishing points vs number of attendance points: the player with more finishing points win.
  2. Winning record: the player with more 1st place finishes wins, then with more 2nd place finishes, etc…

We’re using Bayfoos local points for categories. Top prize is open to everyone. Expert prize is open to anyone with under 3000 points. Rookie prize is open to anyone with under 1500 points.

Hall of Fame Classic Warm-Up Tournament

Schedule for the Hall of Fame Classic Warm-Up Foosball Tournament has been posted.

Some highlights:

The Monster DYP on Friday night should be a blast. Seeding rounds will have random partners, but at the end of the evening only the top 8 will make the playoffs… and they won’t know in advance who their partner will be. Should be quite a battle.

Forward Shootout on Saturday! First time we’ve run this event that I can remember.

Open Singles and Open Doubles on Saturday as well: come test your game against the best in the bay!

2K Singles and 2K Doubles on Sunday: only to anyone with <2k local points. We’ve gotten great turnout for these events, looking forward to good competition here.

What’s a DYP?

Secrets of foosball, finally revealed…

One of the most common foosball tournament formats in the US is something called a “DYP”: a Draw Your Partner tournament. DYPs are a great way to get into competitive foosball, giving everyone from beginners to pros a fun and casual way to work on their game. The key thing about DYP tournaments is that partners are drawn randomly. You don’t need to come with a partner in order to play, just show up! If you’re a beginner, your partner will probably have more experience than you and will be able to coach to help you learn.

We run this format in the Bay Area every Tuesday at 8 pm, at California Billiards, and every Thursday at 8 pm, at Kennedy’s Irish Pub and Curry House in SF. Entry fees are from $0-10, depending on your experience level. First timers are always free.

We run a bunch of different varieties of DYP in the Bay Area. If you don’t know the details, don’t worry about it. Just show up, introduce yourself, and the tournament director will make sure you’re in the right place at the right time.

If you do want the details, read on… we run a bunch of different formats, depending on our mood any given evening. These are some of the common ones.

Monster DYP: new partner each round, and play one game to 7. You get 2 points if you win, 1 point if you tie at 6, and 0 points if you lose. Then you get a new partner and we play another round. Around 10 PM we’ll switch to single elimination play-offs, where points are used to seed the top 8 players on to teams. Those teams play best 2/3 matches to determine who wins the tournament. We usually finish by 11 pm.

Points Race DYP: just like a Monster DYP, except we skip the playoffs. Final points tallies are used to award places, with opponent strength and goal differential breaking ties. Again, we’re normally done by 11 pm.

Monster DYP with Singles Playoffs: same as the Monster DYP, but the playoffs has the top 8 players play best 2/3 singles matches instead. The finals usually finish by 11:30 pm.

Double Elimination DYP: you get a random partner at the beginning of the night, and play best 2/3 matches against the rest of the field in a double elimination tournament. The main difference here is you and your partner get a chance to settle in as a team. Start and finish time vary a bit here, it depends on the number of players.
